*****  in English   *****

I planted tulip bulbs in my garden and I made a group planting the other day.  I first learned about “double-decker” then, and the question, “Do the people call it double-decker in English, too?” arose.  I’m writing the result I looked up.

the group planting of tulip (the group planting from winter 2020 to spring 2021)

【seedlings and bulbs I prepared】

                                   time of bloom

Iberis bridal bouquet (a seedling)    Apr. ~ Jun. (It already bloomed in Dec. because it seemed to be adjusted the tome of bloom for selling in the market.)

Rainbow-colored viola (pansy)        Nov. ~ May

Glory of the snow                   middle of Feb. ~ end of Mar.

Candy Prince (tulip)                 end of Mar. ~ beginning of Apr.

Page Polka (tulip)                   beginning of Apr. ~ end of Apr.

Finola (tulip)                        middle of Apr. ~ beginning of May

I bought a set of bulbs.

In order that bulbs can be planted thickly without touching each other, you plant small bulbs above big one.  Followed the instruction, I planted three kind of tulip in the deeper spot first, and I did Glory of the snow in upper layer.

You can plant only bulbs, but regarding to especially tulips, you have to water them frequently even during winter when they don’t sprout.  Therefore, if you grow the flowers which bloom from winter to spring in the same pot, you can avoid to forget watering them.  I’m fully confident that I forget watering 😅, I planted rainbow-colored violas and Iberis.

What does “double-decker” mean?

Like this, to plant bulbs which species and time of bloom are different in two layers is called “double-decker”.  (If you do in three layers, it’s called “triple-decker”.)

This way enables to plant many bulbs in the limited space such as container and you can make a lot of flowers bloomed and you can enjoy them for a long time.

Do they use “double-decker” in English as the way of planting?

Checked with English-Japanese dictionary, it says, “dual layered” “a vehicle which has two levels” “a sandwich which is made with two layered food pinched by three bread” and it doesn’t show example of the expression “to plant in two layers”.  The same goes for Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English.  That’s why I thought that the word exist as English one, but Japanese people use it differently.

Then, I checked with Yahoo! U.S.A.  Checked the word, “double-decker”, they show the article regarding “a bus with two levels” mostly and the things related gardening aren’t hit.  I changed the search word to “double-decker bulb planting”, many sites like the following are hit. ↓

I learned that the word, “double-decker” is also used as gardening term which means to plant in two layers in English.  That’s the result of my research 😀
