可哀そうなブロッコリーと、〇〇色の〇〇
園芸にまつわる英語の慣用句を思い出したので、いきなりですが
クイズを出します。「私は園芸が得意です」を、
英語で 「I have a ～」（私は～を持っている）から始める場合、
「I have a 」に続く言葉は、何色の何でしょう？

…を発表する前に、この慣用句を思い出したいきさつを書きます。
１週間前の10/4、前回の投稿の通り、ブロッコリーの苗の植え付けを
しました。その時土が足りなかったので次の日に土を買いに行って土を足し、
前から用意していた防虫ネットを被せました。
これで安心していたら、数日後たまたまテレビで茎ブロッコリーの植え付けをやっていて、
支柱を立てていないことに気づいたのです。
台風が近づいてきているので強風で倒れてしまわないか心配になり、
慌てて割り箸を手に雨の中、ブロッコリーの元へ。
雨で濡れずに済む場所から手を伸ばして無理な姿勢で作業をしたこと、
パッションフルーツの茎を支柱に巻き付けるのは何度もやっているから
簡単に出来る、という慢心がいけなかったのでしょう。
ブロッコリー２号の茎を傷めないように結束バンドで茎の周りに輪を作り、
残りを割り箸の支柱に巻きつけようとしたところ、なんと！！
茎をちぎってしまいました😱😱
ショックでその日はブロッコリー１号の支柱を立て、防虫ネットを元に戻したところで
作業終了。
そして昨日10/11、何かあったときのために残しておいた3号をプランターに
植え付けました。
そこで、思ったのです。
「こんな失敗をするなんて、私の趣味は園芸なんて言えないな。
いっそのこと、ブログを “園芸下手による失敗日記” にでも改名しようか…。
でも、自己啓発本によると自分のことを“園芸が下手”なんて言うと、
潜在意識に刷り込まれ、本当にそうなってしまうんだった！
むしろ、自分は園芸が得意、と言わなきゃ!」と。
そういえば英語でそんな慣用句があったな、と思い出したわけです。
長くなりましたが、答えは、
２番のgreen thumb 緑色の親指 👍です。
植物を扱う人は指が緑色で汚れるから、だそうです。
ただし、下記のサイトの投稿を見ると、イギリスでは “I have green fingers.”と
言うようです。
めげずに “I have a green thumb.”と、自分に言い聞かせようと思います🙂

As the English idiom came to mind, this is a bit sudden, I’ll do the quiz now.

… will told you after I tell you how I happened to remember this idiom.
A week ago, in October 4, as I wrote in my last diary, I set broccolis in the planter.
I found that I didn’t have enough soil. Then, I went to buy it and add it to the planter.
And also, I set the net for protecting from insects which I had prepared.
I felt it’s perfect, but the TV program introduced how to set the seedlings of broccolini and I found that I didn’t set the pole.
As typhoon was approaching, I was worried the broccoli seedlings might broken by strong wind and I went to the broccoli planter with disposable chopsticks which is used as pole while it’s raining.
I think my bad position when I stretched my arms and worked from the place where I could avoid getting wet in the rain and my ego that I thought I could do it easily because I have many experiences of doing it for passionfruit caused problem.
I made a circle around the broccoli no. 2’stalk with a banding band first to avoid damaging the stalk, and I tried to tied it to the pole with the rest of the band, lo and behold, I broke it 😱😱
I set the pole for broccoli no. 1 and covered the net and I stopped working that day because I got a shock.
Then, yesterday, October 11, I planted the broccoli no. 3 which I kept in case something happens to no. 1 and 2 in the planter.
Then, I thought, “I should not say that my hobby is gardening. Or better yet, I’ll change my blog title to “failure diary by the person who is not good at gardening.” But according to self-help books, if you say so, the idea will be instilled to my subconscious and it becomes true!
I should rather say, “I’m good at gardening!”
Therefore, I remembered that they have such idiom in English.
It took a while, but the answer is no.２．green thumb 👍
Because gardener’s fingers are stained with green.
But according to the post in the following site, they say, “I have green fingers.” in the U.K.
I don’t let it get me down, but I’ll remind myself, “I have a green thumb.” 🙂
